The reverse of the Libertad features the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column which is graced with a beautiful winged Victory. The column is flanked by the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl which have a romantic story behind their names: a pair of ancient, star-crossed Aztec lovers. The design of the reverse, while using the same winged subject, has changed three times since it was launched in 1982.

The center of the obverse side shows the modern Mexican coat of arms that includes an eagle fighting a serpent as it rests on the arm of a cactus. In addition to the modern coat of arms, the 1 oz, 2 oz and 5 oz size coins show the 10 historic versions of the coat used since 1821 circling the larger modern version.

There is not a set face value on any of the Mexican Libertad coins; making them some of the few bullion coins, along with the Krugerrand, that have no set face value, even so the coins are considered legal tender.

The Mexican Mint is the Western Hemisphere’s oldest operating mint. Its most popular series is the Libertad bullion coins.

ATB – Voyageurs Park

The third America The Beautiful release for 2018 commemorates the Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota.

In 1971, the parks department established the park “to preserve . . . the outstanding scenery, geological conditions, and waterway system” inherent to the park, which protects 218,054 acres, including 84,000 acres of water.”

The reverse of the 5 oz. silver coin portrays a common loon floating in front of a rock cliff in the background. As with all of the America The Beautiful coins, the obverse is the classic profile of George Washington that is depicted on circulating U.S. quarters. The design on the reverse was created by Joseph Menna, Sculptor-Engraver.

Voyageurs National Park is in northern Minnesota, near the Canadian border. This huge park is best known for its forests, waterways and vast island-filled lakes including: Rainy, Kabetogama and Namakan. It is fitting that this water-dominated park is the northern-most crown in Minnesota’s “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” In fact, the streams and lakes comprise about 40% of the park’s area. The park is named for the woodsman/boaters who traversed these lands throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, hauling goods and passengers to and from Canadian trading posts working for fur companies. In 1971, the area’s status as a national park was signed into law by President Nixon.

The common loon is an iconic symbol of Voyageurs. Their eerie calls leave a lasting impression on visitors who hear the sound echoing across the park’s lakes. In fact, the common loon is the state bird of Minnesota, as it supports the largest loon population in the lower 48 states

The America the Beautiful 5 oz. Silver Quarter Series began in 2010 to commemorate national parks, monuments, and historical sites. Five new coins are released each year. The 5 oz silver bullion coins are enlargements of the same designs depicted on the quarters that are in normal circulation.

The huge antler rack is shed and regrown each year and can reach up to five feet across. With this phenomenally speedy regrowth, it’s not surprising to hear that the moose is believed to have the fasted bone growth rate of any animal on the planet.

Each coin includes the same security features that the Royal Canadian Mint has developed for its respected bullion. This includes: a micro-engraved maple leaf laser mark in the coin’s field that has the numeral “19”, denoting the coin’s year of issue that is visible under magnification.

Incuse Maple Leaf

For the second year in a row, the Royal Canadian Mint has produced a coin with an incused strike. This edition of the Silver Maple Leaf has an incuse strike on both sides. The definition of incuse is having the image struck/recessed into a coin as opposed to the standard raised relief. The now classic Walter Ott-designed maple leaf image is displayed on the reverse and the image of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait is portrayed on the obverse.

Few mints have attempted a sunken design. The unique and unusual format makes them more challenging to strike and, thus, highly unusual in the marketplace.

This distinctive design is destined to be a highly-desired coin around the globe.

The platinum version features the same depiction of “Britannia” that is on the silver and gold versions.

“Britannia” first appeared on the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s coins, circa AD 119. The image was then brought back for the coinage of Charles II in 1672. This spirit of the British Isles has evolved over time. She has been shown with olive branch and owl for peace and wisdom, and with Corinthian helmet and shield for strength and courage, while her trident amid waves or rocky shores salutes Britain’s naval strength.

In 1987, sculptor Philip Nathan created the design that is struck now. He shows the iconic figure of Britannia standing windswept in a Grecian gown, waves at her feet; trident, shield and olive branch in hand. His elegant and instantly recognizable Britannia still endures nearly 30 years later.

A new element of the Britannia coins is a guilloche background design on the obverse side.

American Buffalo – 2018

DEALERS: Call the trading room to order 800.375.4653 or login to FizTrade.com

The gold Buffalo, which is a recreation of America’s iconic “Indian Head” or “Buffalo Nickel,” is America’s first 24 karat gold bullion coin. The government guarantees the coin’s weight and purity.

These pure gold coins were authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act on December 22, 2005.

The original nickel design was first minted in 1913 to salute the spirit of the American West. The Native American who is depicted on this gold bullion coin is a composite of three different American Indians. The sculptor, James Earle Fraser, identified two of them before his death as Chief Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne. Many people have claimed that they sat for the piece, but Fraser said he was not able to recall the third person. As for the buffalo? Many believe “Black Diamond,” the New York Zoological Gardens’ buffalo was the model for the bison on the reverse.

ATB Silver – George Rogers Clark

This is the fifth and final 2017 release in the American The Beautiful Series. The 5 oz. Silver America the Beautiful Coin celebrates the George Rogers Clark National Historic Park with a depiction of Clark leading his valiant frontiersman to wrest a huge swath of Indiana territory from the British. On February 6, 1779, one of the most famous events of the Revolutionary War began as Clark and around 170 brave men marched across leagues of sleet, snow and ice to overthrow the British Fort Sackville in Vincennes. After an intense two days of fighting the Fort was taken.

The America the Beautiful 5 oz. Silver Quarter Series began back in 2010, and has become a highly popular bullion coin series with coin collectors. The series commemorates national parks, monuments, and historical sites, releasing five new coins each year. The 5 oz silver bullion coins are enlargements of the same designs depicted on the quarters that are in normal circulation.

Background on the park
At the center of the park is the memorial rotunda. When you enter, you are greeted by sculptor Hermon MacNeil’s bronze statue of the youthful Clark, standing seven and one-half feet tall. The soldier and patriot was only 25 years old when he decide to lead a cadre of frontiersmen into the Illinois Country and strike the heart of the British-controlled terrain. The inscription on the statue reads, “If a country is not worth protecting it is not worth claiming.”

Upon the walls of the memorial rotunda, seven murals depict the Clark expedition story:
The seven murals represent:
1. Kentucky: Entering the great valley
2. Cahokia: Native Tribes – Peace or war?
3. The Wabash: The wilderness and the flood
4. Vincennes: The British block the way to the west
5. Fort Sackville: Britain retreats
6. Marietta: The new Northwest territory
7. St. Louis: Opening the way to the Pacific

This will be the first full year for the Gold American Eagle’s new reverse design. (The reverse image was changed in the middle of 2021,)

The American Eagle Gold Bullion Coins were first minted in 1986 after being authorized by the Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and is produced from gold that is newly mined from sources in America.

American Eagles use the durable 22 karat standard established for gold circulating coinage over 350 years ago. Each coin contains its full, stated weight of pure gold with the balance consisting of silver and copper, added to increase the coin’s durability.

American Eagles’ chief unique property is that they are the only gold bullion whose weight, content and purity are guaranteed by the United States Government. American Eagles are also valid for precious metals Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs).

The obverse (front) design is inspired by artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ celebrated $20 gold piece that was minted from 1907-1933. It is considered by many to be one of America’s most beautiful coins.

The new reverse features a new profile of an American eagle. Jennie Norris from the Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist designed the eagle and Mint medallic artist Renata Gordon sculpted it.

The original reverse was designed by sculptor Miley Busiek and depicts a male eagle carrying an olive branch as he flies over the nest of his mate and her hatchlings. According to Busiek, the design was inspired by Ronald Reagan’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in 1980. The theme of his speech was ‘Together, a new beginning.’ In an interview in “Coin News Today”, Busiek said, “I didn’t think that anyone had ever depicted our national symbol, the American bald eagle, except as a single heraldic eagle. I liked the idea of thinking of America as a caring family, so I put together a sketch showing not just one eagle, but a whole family.”

Perth Lunar Gold

2020 is the Year of the Rat or Mouse in the Chinese Lunar calendar. The Perth Mint continues its Australian Lunar series with the 2020 designs in each 99.99% fine gold coin. The series changes each year to depict the animal that represents that year.

Perth Mint was the first major mint to create an original precious metal coin program that celebrates the Chinese lunar calendar. The first in the series was struck for the Year of the Mouse in 1995.

The reverse of the 2020 coin depicts a field mouse with a wheat stalk. The design also incorporates the Chinese character for ‘rat’, the inscription ‘Year of the Mouse’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. The Australian Lunar series also includes silver coins.

Chinese New Year for 2020 starts on January 25th. In Chinese culture, rats are a sign of wealth and surplus. Chinese Zodiac descriptions say that “Rats” are optimistic, energetic and likable. British Sovereign

This is the 200th anniversary of Britain’s modern Sovereign. For two centuries this coin has been a constant of British coinage and considered the flagship of the Royal Mint. The 2017 release is a celebration of this status.

The 2017 design returns to Benedetto Pistrucci’s original ‘garter’ sculpture which was first struck in 1820. Pistrucci’s artwork features St George and the dragon surrounded by the full Old French inscription and garter border. For this 2017 edition, the date is shown on the obverse for the first time since 1887. It also features a new shield mint mark, below the slain dragon, to signify the two century anniversary. The coin’s obverse shows the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.

The Silver Britannia has the same design as the Gold Britannia that was first launched in 1987.

The original design for both coins created by Sculptor Phillip Nathan and depicts the heroic personification of Britain, Britannia. She stands braced against a strong gale holding a shield that displays the Union Jack and a trident that symbolizes England’s important naval history. A new accent was added to the 2017 design, it is a burst of sun light radiating from behind Britannia.

The obverse is now struck with an effigy of King Charles III which was created by renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings, and has been personally approved by His Majesty. In keeping with tradition, the King’s portrait faces to the left, the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth II. The Latin inscription surrounding the effigy reads “CHARLES III” “D” “G” “REX” “F” “D” which stands for ‘Charles III, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith’.

Following the success of the Gold Britannia, the Royal Mint launched a one-ounce Silver version in 1997. The first year, a small mintage of the Silver coins were only issued as proofs. The silver coin’s fine metal content has increased over time. From 1998-2012, these Silver bullion were struck in .958 fine Silver, then, starting in 2013, the Britannia was increased to .999 fine.

The Platinum Philharmonic features the same artful design as the Gold and Silver Philharmonics which includes the image of the great pipe organ from the Vienna Musikverein’s Golden Hall on the obverse and a octet of instruments on the reverse side: a cello, four violins, a harp, a bassoon and an instrument that was developed for Viennese orchestral performances, the Vienna horn.

Beginning in 2017, the mint added new tamper evident seals to the mint tubes that contain multiples of ten and monster boxes. The Individual coins are packaged in protective plastic.

The platinum Philharmonic is currently only offered in the 1 oz. size, which is Eligible for Precious Metals IRAs.

Australian Funnel Web Spider

The Perth Mint continues its theme of deadly animals featured on the nation’s bullion with the Australian Funnel-Web Spider.

British Britannia 2017

The Britannia celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

To commemorate the milestone, The Royal Mint is using the original design by Sculptor Phillip Nathan from 1987 for the 2017 1 oz. gold bullion. In this design Britannia, the heroic female personification of Britain, stands on England’s South coast braced against a powerful wind holding a trident and a shield adorned with the Union Jack. There is a new accent though, the 2017 design features a radial sunburst behind the iconic spirit of Britain.

The figure of Britannia, a warrior queen or goddess, has been used on British coins since the days of the empire. She has often been said to reflect powerful women through the ages, and, in the case of certain British queens, the events and attitudes of their reigns.

During the eighteenth century her image was used to reinforce Britain’s mastery of the seas when she was first seen with a trident.

Peace Dollar

The Peace dollar was minted by the U.S. from 1921 to 1928, and again in 1934 and 1935. A competition was held to find the best design representing peace following the end of World War I. The winner was Anthony de Francisci whose creation features the head and neck of the Goddess of Liberty in profile on the obverse. The reverse depicts a bald eagle at rest clutching an olive branch, with the legend “Peace”.

The initial design featured a broken sword, but public reaction caused the sword to be removed prior to the coin being struck. Many felt the broken sword represented defeat.

The Peace dollar was first struck on December 28, 1921; just over a million were coined bearing a 1921 date. When the Pittman Act requirements were met in 1928, the mint ceased to strike the coins, but more were struck in 1934 and 1935 as a result of other legislation. In 1965, the mint struck over 300,000 Peace dollars bearing a 1964 date, but these were never issued, and all are believed to have been melted.

Both sides feature radial lines that have been added as an anti-counterfeit measure. In addition, a laser-micro-engraved textured maple leaf privy mark is found on the reverse of the coin. In the center of this mark is the numeral denoting the coin’s year of issue.

The design on both the reverse and obverse mimic the ones found on both the Gold and Silver Maple Leafs, including the new effigy of King Charles III on the obverse.

First minted in 1997, the American Platinum Eagle is the first and only official platinum coin from the U.S Mint.

From 1997 to 2008, the Bullion Platinum Eagles were issued in 1oz, .5oz, .25oz, and .1oz denominations. The Platinum Eagle was not struck from 2009 to 2013. In 2015, the bullion was also not minted due to an insufficient quantity of blanks.

Starting in 2014, the Mint ceased striking the fractional coins, leaving the one ounce denomination.

The Director of the United States Mint Philip N. Diehl, American Numismatic Association President David L. Ganz, and Platinum Guild International Executive Director Jacques Luben began the legislative process that lead to the creation of the Platinum Eagle in 1995. The first fine platinum coins were finally released by the United States Mint two years later. The Platinum Eagle is authorized by the United States Congress,  and is backed by the United States Mint for weight, content, and purity.

While the Platinum Bullion has kept the same motifs on the obverse and reverse each year since its inception, the Proof offered new designs every year on the reverse from 1997 to today, with the exception of its 20th anniversary mintage which featured the original soaring eagle. The obverse of the proof coins showed the same closeup of the Statue of Liberty from 1997 to 2017. In 2018, the proofs began a new series that changes the obverse each year that illustrates one word from the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence, while the reverse of each year shows the same eagle.

Proof versions of the coins are intended for coin collectors and sold directly to the public whereas the bullion versions are sold only to the Mint’s authorized buyers.

  • A textured maple leaf privy mark is micro-engraved on the reverse side, with the numeral “24” that denotes the coin’s year of issue.

The Silver Maple Leaf also features the Royal Canadian Mint’s special Mint Shield surface protection.

The Gold Maple Leaf coin was introduced in 1979 and rapidly grew in popularity as the only alternative bullion to the Krugerrand, which was going through distribution issues due to the boycott of apartheid-era South Africa. Gold Maple Leafs minted between 1979 and 1982 have a gold content of .999. In 1982, its purity was raised to .9999, making it the world’s first 99.99% pure gold bullion coin.

The Gold Maple Leaf’s reverse features a detailed sculpture of Canada’s iconic maple leaf by RCM engraver, Walter Ott. This had been the same leaf design used since the coin’s inception. For the first time, the obverse features the effigy of King Charles III. This image was updated three times during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

In 2013, a laser-micro-engraved textured maple leaf privy mark was added on a small area of the reverse (Maple Leaf) side of the coin. In the center of this mark is the numeral denoting the coin’s year of issue, which is only visible under magnification. In 2015, the radial lines on the coin’s background on both sides of the coin were added.

Starting in 2014, all gold Maple Leafs featured three distinct, enhanced security characteristics: advanced engraving, laser-marking technology, and precision radial lines. The Mint combines these features with their Bullion DNA to provide instant authentication for registered 1-ounce Gold and Silver Maple Leaf coins. (Bullion DNA is not featured on fractional sizes.) This registration process features Digital Non-destructive Activation (DNA)technology that captures images encrypted with a string of codes and stores them in the mint’s secure database.

The Royal Canadian Mint’s Bullion DNA Reader technology can authenticate of Gold Maple Leaf coins dated 2014 and later, and Silver Maple Leaf coins dated 2015 and later in real-time.

Interesting Note

In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint unveiled a 100kg Gold Maple Leaf coin that was 99.999% pure. It had a face value of $1 million, but its metal value at the time of release was over $3.5 million. Only five of these massive, 50 cm in diameter by 3 cm thick, coins were struck.
On 26 March 2017, one of the five pieces was stolen from the Bode Museum. The heist remained a mystery for over a year. In July 2018, German police arrested members of an alleged Lebanese mob family for the theft.

The Presidential $1 Coin Act authorized the production of these 24-karat coins on December 22, 2005. The design for these coins resurrected the work of American sculptor James Earle Fraser for America’s five-cent coin, which popularly came to be known as the “Indian Head,” or “Buffalo Nickel.” It was introduced in 1913 and celebrates the American West with the noble Indian profile on the obverse and the buffalo on the reverse.

According to the U.S. Mint, the Native American depiction is a composite of three different individuals, with two of them identified by the artist before his death as Chief Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne. While there have been many who have said that they sat for Fraser, the artist could not recall the third person. It’s widely believed that Fraser used “Black Diamond,” a buffalo who lived in New York’s Zoological Gardens, as the model for the bison on the coin’s reverse.

Notably, James Earle Fraser created one of the best-known American sculptures in America. Entitled “End of the Trail,” it was completed before Fraser was 17 years old in 1894 and won the $1,000 award from the American Art Association in Paris. This award brought Fraser to the attention of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the designer of the $10 and $20 eagle and double eagle coins. Saint-Gaudens, a member of the association’s jury that selected Fraser for the award, later asked Fraser to become his assistant.
